sheremetyevo international airport, moscow’s largest airport hosts a new multi brand store. a novelty in travel retail, the luxury goods zone evokes a department store feeling with inviting three wall boutiques that are artfully arranged around a central area.
“I would say it’s the best shop I have ever seen in travel retail.” says claus heinemann, co-owner of our client Gebr. Heinemann. with reference to moscow’s history and russian lifestyle, the store design derives from the famous fabergé egg, a symbol of luxury and goldsmithing. its diamond-shaped, faceted surface serves as a continuous design motif throughout the store and can be found down to the very detail. materials like whitened oak and brass that are mixed with terrazzo and marble emphasize an ambience of “new luxury”. the bespoke display furniture is based on a flexible design, giving the arrangement a modern lightness.
spanning 830 sqm, the travel department store hosts brands like Cartier, Coach, Furla, McM, Ferragamo, Tumi, Bulgari, Montblanc, Etro and Pinko to name a few. as the concept is very well received by brands and traveling customers, Gebr. Heinemann and plajer & franz studio are currently working on further store concepts for an international roll out.

plajer & franz studio has been designing stores for workwear brand ENGELBERT STRAUSS at a time when future prospects for the stationary trade are not promising. but the forward-thinking mail-order brand decided to go from online into offline business. the success proves that innovative logistic and an authentic retail concept for a niche product can boost the business and it’s brands image in nowadays online world.
at the two-day, high-profile conference, concepts like „supermercato del futuro“ by coop, live video shopping, 3d-printed products and other innovations of the digital revolution unveiled new aspects of future retail lifestyles. but everybody agreed, that technology should stay in the background and support the topic “retail of tomorrow”, but can not replace it.
