KARL LAGERFELD has re-opened the munich based flagship-store with a premiere: the brand presented a new retail concept to the german customers. our design was inspired by karl lagerfeld’s office and home with its elegant, clean aesthetic and an inviting and open feel.
the designer’s preferred materials marble, brass and black chrome create luxurious accents. a carpet with a geometric pattern reflects one he designed for his apartment. gold-framed mirrors, red velvet armchairs, french panels and a parquet floor are inspired by his office. spanning 140 sqm on two floors, the store’s central element is a marble staircase with an installation of chrome frame elements in front of a black wall. the wall is used for changing photo exhibitions.

located in busan, the second largest city of korea, centum city is considered the biggest department store of the world (293,905 m²). besides distinct shopping experiences it offers leisure and cultural facilities, including a spa, a skating rink, a golf course and a multiplex theater. in 2016, shinsegae department store opened yet a new mall next to centum city. for this second construction phase, plajer & franz studio was commissioned to implement extensive interior design tasks (total of 17.890 sq m) in “centum-a” as well as designing the whole interior of the newly built “centum-b”. we developed a variety of high-quality public spaces such as food, pop-up and market space as well as retail areas for the brands.
implementing a new design strategy for “centum a”, our design team developed a concept based on the claim: my beautiful market. the idea was to adapt the culture and the charm of new york’s chelsea market to the existing design of the shopping center. pop up areas, a fashion tunnel, gourmet food and resting areas fill the market including spaces for art exhibitions and instagram walls at the escalators to post selfies.
sanho square is a two-storied entrance space connecting centum city with the subway terminal. its generous design creates an open and inviting atmosphere for the arriving visitors. the columns are mirrored or led-covered and supplemented with high-end surfaces such as a marble flooring. on the other end of the shopping promenade, plajer & franz designed an underground circled square as a place for solemn relaxation and for art exhibitions. The minimalistic space with its high curved walls and columns and a light ceiling creates a spectacular thus homely atmosphere.
for new built “centum b” plajer & franz studio developed an overall idea of a city oasis with curated areas throughout all floors including all public spaces such as elevators, voids etc. the concept of a “city oasis” creates an atmosphere of the city’s recreation areas visualized by natural colors, materials and patterns.
plajer & franz studio has been designing projects in asia for many years, from flagship stores, department stores up to the design of shopping malls. through an intensive examination of the asian culture, our office has developed a special understanding of its precise and deep perspectives, its implementation of very specific looks and their justifications.
